salt & light
God created us with so many gifts. We can use these gifts to praise God, to serve God, and to show God’s love. God gave us these gifts so that we can share them with the world. But to do that, we have to practice them and be willing to share them. If you love to color, that’s a gift. But it’s even better if you practice it and make creations to give to others, bringing color, beauty and imagination to many more people.

Matthew 5:13-16 13 “You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. 14 “You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. 15 No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. - NRSV |
Do It
Seasoned Oyster Crackers:
Make the following recipe together. Before mixing things together, taste the oyster crackers. Talk about how little taste they have. As you add ingredients, talk about how they will all work together to make these crackers have lots of flavor. If you can fit it in with the craziness that might be going on in your kitchen while trying to cook with little ones, talk about how practicing the gifts God gives us is kind of like adding all these ingredients to the crackers. The practice makes us come alive. Once they’re cooled, sample the crackers, and maybe put some in baggies to give to people your child thinks are good at being “salty.”
Ingredients:
½ tsp dill weed
¼ cup oil
1 box (16 oz) oyster crackers
1 packet (1 oz) ranch dressing/seasoning mix
¼ tsp garlic powder (optional)
Place crackers in gallon-size zip-lock bag. Pour oil over the crackers, seal bag and toss to coat. Add dressing mix, dill and garlic powder (optional) and toss again until coated evenly. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 250 F for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
This Little Light of Mine:
Sing it, using a flashlight and a cloth or basket as props, and allowing it to get active (and perhaps a little silly). If you want to, play this song on youtube and sing/dance to it with your props. This song can be a good way for very young children to start to understand the basic concept that Jesus was trying to teach. Our family also enjoyed this one.

God, thank you for the gifts you have given us. Help us practice them and use them to shine your light in the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
