december: resurrection fish breakfast
Our final story this year comes right after Jesus’ resurrection. Jesus appeared to some of his disciples who were out in their boat. After fishing all night and catching nothing (just like they were doing when Jesus first called them to follow him), Jesus came along and told them to cast their net on the other side. It came up full of fish, and when that happened, they recognized Jesus. They came ashore and had a breakfast of fish around a fire with Jesus, which sounds like a pretty joyful time!

Pray It
Jesus, you are full of surprises. You show up, you care for us, and you invite us to celebrate with you. Amen.

Make It
Here’s a simple fish recipe. If you live in a climate where you can cook it over an open fire like Jesus did, give it a try! Maybe you want to invite some people you haven’t seen for awhile to join you, so you can have a reunion fish feast like Jesus and the disciples did. If you really want to step into the story, have your fish for breakfast.
Ingredients
Dressed fish (any kind will work - go catch your own if you want to be really authentic and live in a climate where you can!)
Butter or olive oil chopped parsley (or other herbs)
salt and pepper chopped onion
Optional: garlic wedges, lemon wedges
Aluminum foil - or large leaves (sycamore, maple, walnut…) and string

salt and pepper chopped onion
Optional: garlic wedges, lemon wedges
Aluminum foil - or large leaves (sycamore, maple, walnut…) and string
Instructions
- Clean, wash and dry the fish.
- Divide it into portions and place them on foil, or on leaves that have been overlapped to create a pouch.
- Season the fish with oil or butter, salt, and pepper, turning to coat both sides. Season with optional lemon or garlic.
- Place onion and parsley on fish.
- Bring foil over fish and seal edges with double folds. If you’re using leaves, make sure they overlap to cover the fish completely. Secure them with string to keep them closed.
- Place the packages on hot coals or on a grill. Turn after five minutes. Cook another 5 minutes, then unwrap carefully and eat!
- Children can help with cleaning, washing and patting fish dry.
- Let them brush on the oil or butter and sprinkle on the seasoning, as well as placing the onion and parsley on it.
- They can help you package the fish

Pretend to fish! - The fishermen in the Bible went fishing with nets to catch large quantities of fish. The simplest way to pretend to fish like they did is combine it with bathtime: Capture bathtub toys with a strainer (or butterfly net if you have one). Your child is likely to be more familiar with the idea of fishing with a pole. Here’s an idea: Draw, color, and cut fish on heavy paper or cardboard scraps and put a paper clip (which is magnetic) on the mouths. Make a pole by tying a small magnet to one end of a string and a short stick, dowel, or ruler to the other end. A sofa or chair can provide the makeshift boat to fish from. Let their imaginations take over from here!
