John 1:1-5 "The Light Shines in the Darkness"
This passage in John remembers the beginning of Genesis, the creation story, and sees that Jesus exists in all of it. Because of Jesus, all things are made and have life. The light that is Jesus is powerful. Nothing can overcome Jesus. Jesus is bigger than any problem we face, more mighty, more powerful. Bad things may happen, but God is bigger. God always was and always has been and always will be. These are words of comfort, for us and for our children. Write the words of verse five especially on your children’s hearts, and those words will be a comfort in times of distress.

John 1:1-5
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. |

Do It
Light and darkness are companions. Light has an effect because of darkness. In Advent, there is something magical about turning out the lights and lighting the candles, or looking at the way Christmas lights light up the dark. Play with it as a family. Gather some of the things that make light in this season - candles, LED candles, Christmas lights - and look at how small they are. Then turn out the lights and marvel at how these little lights have such power in the darkness. Sit in that shadowy light and notice how you see and experience things differently from full light.
Daily Life: As you go through this season, pause to say this verse when you see reminders of it. When you see a house lit up for Christmas, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

Pray It
God, you always have been and always will be. You are more powerful and bigger than anything we can imagine. Help us to prepare for you to break into our world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
